Secular solutions or power from God: one is based upon labor and self-understanding; the other is based upon faith in words. Which method really overcomes life’s rough spots?
Life is filled with love, joy, and passion. A walk on the beach, an oceanfront breeze, and the hand of a lifelong spouse strengthens the bonds of love. A newborn kitten, a wide-eyed child, and the wisdom of a grandparent awaken our joy. A snow bound cabin, a roaring fireplace, and a special moment of privacy intensify the passion of newlyweds.
Life is also tempered with loneliness, sorrow, and pain. Thieves steal the oxen, slay the servants, and leave us in ruin. Hail fire from heaven consumes sheep and servants alike, and we are stunned. Chaldeans fall upon the camels, steal them away, and slay servants with the edge of the sword; and we are devastated. But all is not finished, for pain and sorrows have only begun. There is more to come, much more; and the hurt of it will flow deep into our bones such that we become sick in body, mind, and spirit.
Can you see in the land of Uz a just man called, Job? In many ways, he is like unto us. He labors to make a living. He cares for and provides for his family. He believes in and serves, Jehovah, the God of creation. But on a day like any other day, the peace of Job’s life comes to an abrupt halt.
On this particular day, on three separate but back-to-back occasions, three different servants have come to his door, each relaying a distinct tale of harm, destruction, and death, each speaking these same fateful words: “I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”
Oh, hear Job’s groans. We know them well, if feelings at all we have, for each of us has at one time or another experienced from within ourselves the rising of like sounds. But for Job, and perhaps for many of us, there is yet one more servant that must report. See him now, running up to Job’s door, knowing not the terrors that have preceded the message that he now bears. It is written like this:
” While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee,” (Job 1:18-19).
Did he need to tell Job that this last message was one that spoke of sons, and daughters, and of future hopes that were ended and finished beneath stones of a fallen home? No. I think not, for these children were all that remained. As that last messenger came rushing into Job’s home, this just and honest servant of God must have known within his belly a raging scream of awareness. Even before the messenger could speak the words that he must surely bear, Job’s torment would have centered into his mind and heart.
The Secular Solution
This article does not deal with broken arms; it deals with broken lives. I am not addressing the secular solution to a toothache; I am focusing on emotional stress and spiritual problems. If you have a physical ailment, and the sickness is not a symptom of mental, emotional, or spiritual warfare see a doctor. Pray first (it may keep you out of the hands of a hack). When a tooth is rotted see a dentist. When a soul is bleeding, see God.
As to secular methods of dealing with emotional, mental, and spiritual problems, I no longer accept their solutions. It is not through a blinded mind that I make this decision, but rather due to experience. I have been to counseling; it is misleading, sometimes damaging, and usually worthless. The same solution concepts that have brought this nation to its figurative knees are those that are offered by secular trained counselors. None seek God, no not one.
A successful counselor must have his patient’s trust and obedience. I have observed as they strive to crush a new Christian’s concepts of the living God. I have seen them sometimes succeed. Not all Christians walk in the word. Not all are set in truth.
It is easier to trust men than it is to trust God. One, though temporal, has a tangible feel. The other is spirit and can only be touched through faith. Secular wisdom can give place to a god, so long as he is a god of convenience that does not interfere with the goals of the counselor. As to the living God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob the counselors often despise His name for it hinders the further corruption of an already broken mind.
Secular wisdom teaches us to accept ourselves just as we are. “Hi, my name is Mike. I am an alcoholic, a fornicator, a bad mother, a drug addict, a wife beater, a thief, a liar, a homosexual, a gossip, a cheat or whatever other label that is necessary to identify the problem.” The concept is simple: you can never change who you are so learn to control it and to live with it. Or else convince society that such behavior is natural.
Next we find a place to put the blame, and then pretend to offer forgiveness unless forgiveness is deemed unacceptable in which case we add “I am unable to forgive” to our list of labels. With this type of solutions, nothing is ever finished. You never become free of being an alcoholic or a fornicator. So you take drugs to let you sleep, and you learn to cope with the weakness or the memories or the pain; and you pretend to be happy. You learn to spit into the eye of God.
You can never say, “Hi, my name is Mike. I used to smoke cigarettes but I do not smoke cigarettes anymore. I may smoke cigarettes tomorrow or even before the day is finished in which case I will once more be a cigarette smoker. But for now, for this moment, I am a nonsmoker.” Why is such sure rejection of a known fault not tolerated by secular healing? Because once a smoker, to the secular solution you must never be allowed to be a nonsmoker. Nonsmokers are free from the guilt of being a smoker. They no longer need a counselor.
I have nut shelled these matters. This is not an in-depth discussion of secular solutions to troubled souls, but rather it is an effort to lend peace to the broken hearted. Know this, if the secular answer to personal failures is so far off base to the needs of the guilty, how much less support can they add to a man or woman or child who stands in the shoes of Job?
Power From God
How did Job respond to his pain? The Bible records it in this manner:
“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly,” (Job 1:20-22).
How strange that he sought no one to blame. How odd that he openly expressed his pain. How honest that he fully accepted his dependence upon an almighty God. He did not have to examine himself so as to find a label of liberation. He did not seek the counsel of other men (though other men would soon arrive, for many are waiting to tell you your faults and to bring you a label under which you must live). He did not turn to pills. He did not doubt God’s purposes. Nor did he seek opportunity to treat himself to a special trip so that he could get away from it all and forget the pain.
Job acknowledged his hurt, accepted God’s right to let it happen, indeed his right to bring it to pass, and Job worshipped. How is it that this just man could so quickly come to terms with these losses? How is it that he could find solace from a prone position?
At the beginning of the scripture it is written that that Job continually rose early in the mornings and made offerings to God. This illustrates a daily fellowship with a living God. This is a man who has already settled in his heart those matters of importance. This life is but a passing moment. We are only here for a little while. Job knew these things. He had already set himself for eternal glory.
Words That Overcome The Rough Spots
How can you too find this place in which Job rested? Stop listening to men. Turn instead to God. The Bible is filled with words of correction, judgment, wrath, and destruction. The Bible is also filled with words of comfort, promise, assurance, and peace. The measure of Bible truth is not limited to a feel-good religion. All are the words of Elohim, Jehovah God. There are many, but I will close with these few. Feel the power:
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint,” (Isaiah 40:28-31).
Are you ready? Have you already stored the words of power within you blossom? If not, begin now. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ that he may fill you with wisdom, truth, and the Holy Spirit of life.
